Kangaroo care

Kangaroo care

The Lulla dolls' unique design is based on multiple scientific research on closeness and kangaroo care. But what is kangaroo care and why is it important to babies?

When Eyrun designed the Lulla doll she dug through tons of researches and papers on the importance of closeness on sleep for babies. Kangaroo care was something that was often mentioned and researching it she saw that it could have very beneficial effect on babies' sleep, especially for premature born babies.

If you have a baby with sleep problems, you fully understand the thought processes of a sleep deprived parent, just as we do. You speak to people around you, to doctors and nurses, read article after article and have pretty much tried every trick in the book.

This is where Lulla doll comes in. The Lulla dolls' unique design is based on multiple scientific research on closeness, kangaroo care, the effects of heartbeat and breathing sounds, and the effects that smell, sight and touch have on babies and small children.

What is Kangaroo Care?

Simply put, Kangaroo Care is all about closeness. Your baby needs to feel the closeness of your body, hear the rhythm of your heart and the sound of you breathing, just as it did before birth. You hold your baby against your bare skin for as long as possible each day.

Typically it is the mother that uses Kangaroo Care. However, it is more than OK for dads to do so as well. Both dads and babies get almost the same benefits of Kangaroo care (see below) and it helps build a stronger bond between the baby and the father.

Benefits of Kangaroo Care

There are many benefits to Kangaroo care (sometimes also called skin-to-skin). As mentioned above this simple method of closeness helps build a stronger bond between a baby and a parent, but there are so many other benefits and here are a few of them.

  • Brain development
By holding your baby close and allow it skin to touch yours, you stimulate the development of neural pathways, since this is a multi-sensory experience for your baby.
  • Reduces stress
Research has shown that a kangaroo'ed baby's cortisol's level, which is the stress hormone, are measurably lowered after 20 minutes of skin-to-skin. Therefore, many parents who use kangaroo care say that their babies cry less and appear less agitated.
  • Improved quality of sleep
During sessions of Kangaroo Care most babies fall asleep and achieve quicker what is called "Quiet sleep". This helps development of mature brain function. Additionally, researches have shown that kangaroo'ed babies spend more time in "Quiet sleep."
  • Helps with weight gain
Due to the reduced stress, the baby is able to have better digestion and decreases the chance of having problems with intestinal gas. Also, the baby isn't as likely to need to burn the brown fat (which it is born with) and is more likely to keep a warm body temperature, without having to burn its own fat stores.
  • Enhances immune system
When placed skin-to-skin, babies receive antibodies from their parents via their parents' skin. Also, this increases baby's skin hydration, which in turn creates a protective barrier from harmful bacteria.

Benefits for the parents

The baby isn't the only one benefiting from kangaroo care. This has also a physiological beneficial effect on the parents.

Researches have shown that the oxytocin level (the "feel-good" hormone) in parents' bodies increase, as testosterone level decreases. This turn of the hormone levels creates a "feel-good and well-being" response, which makes it easier for the parents to nurture and bond with their baby.

However, kangaroo care has a greater effect on mothers, since it promotes milk production and regulation of babies' body temperature. By holding the baby skin-to-skin, mother's breast automatically adjust to cool baby down or warm baby up, in response to what the baby needs.
