What to buy before baby arrives

What to buy before baby arrives

There are so many things that are necessary to buy before the baby arrives but also so many things that are unnecessary but still nice to have.
We'd like to help you out and point out some things that we, as parents ourselves, feel are VERY good to buy before the baby arrives.

Changing

  • Changing pad and/or changing table (some tables include a pad)
  • Diapers - it's good to buy two different sizes so you'll make sure you have the right size for your baby. Most stores allow you to return the diapers if they are too small and get a new size instead.
  • Wipes - we recommend making your own wipes by using purified or boiled water, coconut oil and soft towels/clean wipes. Here is an example of how to make your own wipes
  • Diaper rash cream/zink cream - there are many good brands out there, for example from Weleda

Clothes

Target - baby clothes

  • Flexible pants, leggings or tights
  • Baby socks (unless you only use tights)
  • Outerwear suitable for your location/weather at the time of birth
  • Bloomers and sunglasses, if the weather is warm when the baby starts going outside

Sleep

  • Sleep sack
  • Cradle, crib, co-sleeping cot/bassinet or a bedside crib
  • Mattress (if not included with the cradle/crib)
  • Sheets (in the right size and preferably waterproof) and/or bedding set
  • Waterproof pads (for using under the sheet)
  • Swaddle
  • Baby nest (some find it necessary, others not) safe for newborn babies
  • Mobile for using above the cradle/crib

Co sleeping bassinet

Transportation

  • Car seat suitable for newborn (make sure that your insurance company accepts the seat and it's safe for the baby if it's been used before). Don't forget to place it in the car before going to the hospital!
  • We recommend using a base for the car seat, but it's not necessary (usually the seats can be attached without it)
  • Window sun shade
  • Pram/stroller
  • Baby pram sack or pram sleeping bag, especially if you live in a cold country
  • Baby wrap or carrier
  • Diaper bag (we recommend buying one that both parents like to carry around)

Bathing and hygiene

  • Baby tup
  • Towels (soft hooded)
  • Washcloths
  • Soft hair brush
  • Infant nail clippers
  • Saline drops and bulb syringe, if the baby gets a cold in the first weeks/months
  • Hand sanitizer, very important for guests but also for the family members

Skip hop bath tub

Feeding

  • Baby bottle, in case you will not breastfeed or you want the baby to get used to both
  • Nursing pads (if breastfeeding)
  • Nursing pillow (good for both breastfeeding and bottle feeding)

Other necessary items

  • Burp cloths (and lots of them!)
  • Pacifiers (you might have to try more than one brand before the baby accepts it)

Bibs pacifier

  • Baby blanket, for using when baby is awake/under supervision (thick if you live in a cold area)

And of course, Lulla doll! 🤗
